"There is a
tremendous power in a song. It can travel in time and long
distances. It is capable of spreading joy and strength against
all the evil surrounding us. This is how it was in the ghetto.
Even though we were hungry, uncertain of the next day and
terrified, we sang, danced and recited poetry. It made us less
hungry, less uncertain of the next day and less terrified. When,
singing, we closed our eyes, we imagined spring-time and
ourselves taking a ride on a No. 11 tram along a magnificent
boulevard. Also today when, with my eyes closed, I listen to
Lloica Czackis' beautiful voice, the tune and words of her songs,
the memory from the ghetto comes back to me, of that feeling of
joy and strength against all odds, of spring in the air. I
remember, some of these we sang then, those from the ghetto, but
also the pre-war cabaret songs. Listening makes it easier to
think about the friends, about all those known and unknown
people who were not given a chance to enjoy any more springs and
pacing down boulevards. Lloica, your songs carry memories. Thank
you for that."
